Magnolia Elementary PTA Reading Program 2021-2022
This school year Magnolia Elementary PTA was a recipient of the National PTA Grant for Family Reading Experience, sponsored by Office Depot OfficeMax.
For our program this year, we selected to do Author Interviews and a Book Give to every student.
We worked hard to find two authors we thought would provide continued motivation for reading and inspire the students into the end of the school year, and hopefully beyond.
For K-3, their author interview was with Adam Wallace, we selected a variety of 5 books from his How to Catch Series. He provided us signature plates that we added to each of the book because he’s located in Australia so he couldn’t personally sign them. Adam did not disappoint he discussed writing strategies and did a several drawing exercises. He answered so many questions.
For 4-6, their author interview was with Gordon Korman, we selected a book published in January called Unplugged. He shared his inspiring story of how he became an author at a young age then later turning it into a career. He also shared how he continues to find inspiration for his books now 40 years later now about to have his 100th book published.
To finish off our reading program, we purchased books for the library. Our goal was to expand the variety of books by Adam and Gordon and pick up some other great books. So make sure your child looks for those next year when we start back up. We were recently informed from National PTA as a grant recipient, we will be receiving additional books from partnering with Reading is Fundamental.
We’ve had such great feedback, we really appreciate that as we had a challenging year with few programs we could provide. Please take the time and fill out the National PTA's survey with your student: https://www.pta.org/home/programs/programs-survey
We'd like to thank Adam Wallace and Gordon Korman doing these virtual interviews! It really allowed us to reach students despite the restrictions from covid!
A big thank you to the teachers for working together with us to prepare their students for this activity! From reading the books to preparing questions, the teachers knocked this out of the park!
Thank you to school leadership for being on board with this crazy idea and helping to these interviews to run smoothly.
